Right to Rent legislation
On 7 March 2023, the House of Representatives voted on the “Good Landlordship” bill. The bill was passed and is currently being debated in the Senate. The intention is for the Good Landlordship Act to come into effect on 1 July 2023.
In concrete terms, this law means that a national baseline standard for good landlordship will be established, laying down what can be expected from landlords and rental agents in the rental process in relation to those seeking housing and tenants.
The law contains rules to prevent discrimination and harassment, and stipulates the matters on which a tenant must be informed about the rented property.
Local authorities are responsible for supervising and enforcing general regulations and rental licenses. To do this, they have a number of instruments at their disposal, such as administrative coercion and administrative fines. Local authorities must also establish a reporting point where anonymous and free-of-charge reports of undesirable rental behaviour can be made. vb&t fully supports this legislation because, as a rental agent, we are of the opinion that a transparent rental process is in the interest of both the investor and the tenant.
It's possible that the practical implementation of this legislation will have consequences for vb&t's rental process. Where necessary, we will adapt our rental process to comply with these legal obligations.
