A gas leak is a crack or hole in a gas hose or pipe. It can also be that the pipe or hose is not properly connected to an appliance that uses gas. Natural gas is naturally odourless, but to ensure that a gas leak is detected in time, a malodorant is added to the gas in the Netherlands.
Below are the three main symptoms of a gas leak (in your home):
- Hissing sound
- unpleasant smell
- discolouration or drought
Once gas is detected by smell, the concentration of gas in the air is approximately 1 per cent. There is not an immediate explosion risk at this point. This way, people are warned in good time. It is important that appropriate measures are taken quickly.
What should you do if there is a gas leak?
Look after your own safety
- Don't take unnecessary risks.;
- Open windows and doors;
- Turn off the main gas supply. The gas tap is located just before the gas meter. Usually in the meter cupboard. Note: if the ends of the tap are not aligned with the pipe (i.e. at a right angle to the pipe), it is closed.;
- Under no circumstances should you use fire, sparks, electrical appliances, light switches, cigarettes, incense, or candles.;
- Go outside.
Assess the situation
Check if there are any other people in the premises. Make sure you and others leave the premises.
Report a gas leak
To report a gas leak, call the national emergency number (0800 – 9009) or 112. If you call 112, it is important to ask for the fire brigade. Provide your exact address and explain the current situation.
